2. Configure TCP/IP
- OS 8.5: With the Remote Access window active (click upon
it to make it the active window), you can access this pull
down menu. Select TCP/IP. Alternatively, you can obtain
the TCP/IP window via Apple Menu, Control panels, TCP/IP.
Go to step 3.
- OS 8.0, 8.1: With the PPP window active (click upon it
to make it the active window), you can access this pull
down menu. Select TCP/IP. Alternatively, you can obtain
the TCP/IP window via Apple Menu, Control panels, TCP/IP.
Go to step 3.
- In the TCP/IP window (below), for "Connect via"
you select PPP, and for "Configure", select Using
PPP Server.
- For Name Server address, type in two numbers, 66.184.236.21
(the primary) and 66.184.238.21 (the secondary) as shown.
For Search domain, type in dns1.695online.com as shown.
- Close the window (click small square at top left corner),
saving if prompted. Then go to the next step, Options, Redialing
and Connection.
- Some more complex, optional alternatives for TCP/IP settings
are shown in Alternatives.
3. PPP window: Options, Redialing and Connection
The Options window is obtained from the Options button
in the PPP window. The settings for Redialing and Connection
are optional but we recommend that you do make the settings
as shown below. Widen your Netscape display to view text
and pictures side by side.
Redialing tab
- You can set Redial "Off", or "main number
only". Redial is very useful if you need to try repeatedly
to connect when all lines are busy.
- If Redial is on, the number of redials and time between
retries should not exceed Austel limits (up to 10 redials,
at least 5 seconds apart).
Connection tab
- Click upon the Connection tab to foreground it. The version
illustrated is 8.0/8.1 - the case of 8.5, "Connect
automatically" is in the Protocol tab. We recommend
that "Connect automatically" be off, because often
you may wish to use Netscape or Eudora, for example, for
offline work such as reading web files saved on your hard
disk, composing a long email, etc.
- "Flash icon" is a useful indicator that you
are still connected.
- Now go to the next step in Options, setting Protocol (settings
for Redialing, Connection and Protocol are saved when you
click the OK button). For setting Protocol, you will use
PPP Server Connection.
4. PPP server connection
This page concerns an essential setting for Options: Protocol.
Widen your Netscape display to view text and pictures side
by side. Protocol setting for using PPP server
- Obtain the Protocol tab from the Remote Access/PPP window,
Options (click upon the Protocol tab to foreground it).
- "Use protocol" must be set to "PPP".
Check that the boxes are checked or unchecked as shown.
In the case of 8.0 and 8.1, "Use protocol" is
not present (the equivalent in TCP/IP Control Panel sets
PPP), and "Connect automatically", which is to
be unchecked, is in the "Connection" tab. "Connect
to a command line host" must be unchecked, and in general
its bullets will be empty, except in cases where you have
been using script or terminal window previously.
- Click OK to save Protocol and other Options settings.
Remote Access/PPP window
- Obtain this window from Control Panel Remote Access or
PPP (from Apple Menu, select Control Panels, Remote Access
or PPP). The latter does not have the "Setup"
triangle which enables 'show' (as illustrated here) or 'hide'
connection setup details.
- You will use this window to initiate your connection.
For first time use, you must enter your [Modem settings],
the [TCP/IP settings] and [Options settings].
- Enter your login name in the "Name" box (with
"@695online.com), and your password. The characters
in your password are displayed as "bullets" so
that other persons, if present, cannot read it. "Guest"
login (ie, without password) is not provided.
- If your settings are correct and your modem is ready,
initiate connection by clicking upon the "Connect"
button. However, please read the next section below before
dialing.
Connected window
- The end result from the connection process, is successful.
You will receive intermediate Status messages, "Dialling
[number], "Communicating at [modem speed]" after
the modems have connected, and "Authenticating",
but some steps are not displayed.
- Upon successful connection, the Status portion will be similar
to that shown (in this case connecting to carmen - the "Connected
to:" IP number is different for different kinds of
connections, but it does not require any action by you).
- You can close the PPP window if you wish (click the square
at top left corner), or leave it open. The "Send"
and "Receive" indicators may be re-assuring if
you are uncertain about whether your PPP is functional.
To disconnect, re-open the PPP window if it's not visible,
and click the "Disconnect" button.
- When connected, you can use Netscape to obtain web pages,
Eudora to check and send email, or use other services. Note
that PPP keeps an Activity Log, which may be useful when
checking your telephone call times.
